On Thursday night Mr. Coleman and I decided to watch his dad's Netflix movie pick, The Cove. Maybe I'm a bit behind on this issue and this documentary, but I had no idea what it was about and when I read the description on the Netflix jacket it made me a bit nervous.
Animal cruelty is something that I have no tolerance or stomach for. I find it disgusting when people mistreat people or animals and I was really nervous to watch a movie, Oscar winning or not, that is about how a "small seaside village serves as a horrifying microcosm of massive ecological crimes happening worldwide."
Both Mr. Coleman and I were a little apprehensive about watching a movie about dying animals after we had just put Hazel to sleep earlier in the day but we decided to watch it anyways and I can't tell you how angry it made me. These poor animals are being slaughtered...it's not like they are killing a couple of them every year but roughly 23,000 dolphins a year!
If you are like I was and you haven't heard about this movie or this issue then I would definitely recommend The Cove. It is an amazing documentary that is very well done. I can't help but be saddened by what I learned from the movie but at the same time it makes me hopeful to know that this movie won an Oscar and that awareness about the issue is being made.
I know it may sound cheesy but I believe that we as humans were given this land to live upon and although we were given dominion over the animals I don't think God's intentions were for us to obliterate the beauty that he gave to us in the animals. I acknowledge that some animals must die but the senseless act of killing so many isn't exactly what I think He had in mind. We aren't the only things living on this planet and it's my opinion that we shouldn't take advantage of the fact that nothing we have here is promised to last forever. If we run out of water or food or other necessary resources we may just be the ones to blame. This includes beautiful animals like dolphins who are so smart that we hardly understand all of their capabilities.
Ok...I'm off my soapbox.
Here is the trailer if you are interested, and more can be found out about the documentary and what is going on on their website, www.thecovemovie.com.
