My birthday came early this year!

Some of you might recall this post from earlier this year where I stole a photo from my friend Jenna's blog and posted it here and listed the following goals for 2011.

Goals for the next year.

1. Get banjo.
2. Get lessons.
3. Play a song on said banjo.

Well I accomplished #1 yesterday! Thanks to an early birthday present yesterday I am now the very proud owner of my very own banjo!

I can't even explain my excitement over it...so ecstatic! I've wanted one for so long! It kind of irritates  me that Mr. Coleman can play it and I can't but he's at least going to teach me the basics. (And he assures me that he is just playing guitar on the banjo so it isn't really quite right.) I can't wait to accomplish #2 and #3.

What's playing on your iPod? Old Crow Medicine Show

It's been awhile since I posted about what I've been playing on my iPod lately so I figured it was time.

For the most part during this time of year you will find me listening to Christmas music. I love this season of the year and will take any excuse to play last.fm's Christmas tag radio. When I'm not near the XBOX and last.fm I've found that I've been listening to Old Crow Medicine Show.

I discovered OCMS while listening to last.fm. I was listenting to Avett Brothers radio and OCMS came up a couple of times. I really liked them, enough to download their album O.C.M.S. and I love it! It's got this wonderful blue grass feel going all through the album with this hint of rock n' roll. And to top it all off I just love lead singer Ketch Secor's voice. My favorite song is a song that where the chorus comes from a Bob Dylan outtake from the soundtrack for the film Pat Garrett and Billy the Kid. Ketch Secor later covered the song adding the verses and keeping the original Dylan choruses. Here it is for your listening pleasure.

Blog theft alert!

I stole this photo from my friend Jenna's blog, Isn't she amazing? I have an OBSESSION with banjos. I don't just like them, I love love them! I've wanted one for so long and Mr. Coleman found one that he really likes for me and it's pretty reasonably priced.

Goals for the next year.

1. Get banjo.
2. Get lessons.
3. Play a song on said banjo.

So excited just thinking about it! Then I just need to get Jenna a banjo and get her home from Belgium and we can play together. Stuff of dreams!

What's playing on your iPod? The Avett Brothers

In honor of my recent purchase of tickets to see The Avett Brothers in October, (I am beyond excited,) I thought I would dedicate a "What's playing on your iPod?" post to them.

The Avett Brothers have been on my iPod consistently since I purchased my first album a couple years ago and fell in love. They are so many wonderful things that I love...banjos, harmonies, fun and feeling all wrapped up into one amazing, melodious package.

There's no denying that the sound that siblings make together is something special. We see it all the time in music and The Avett Brothers are no different. Their harmonies are wonderful and their country/rock sensibility just makes me smile. I can't wait to see them in concert. You can check out more of their music at www.theavettbrothers.com.

My favorite album of theirs happens to be Four Thieves Gone: The Robinsville Sessions, I think it might be my favorite because it was the first one I purchased but either way, it stands as my #1. Some of my favorite songs are The Ballad of Love and Hate on the album Emotionalism, At the Beach on the album Mignonette and 40 East on Four Thieves Gone.

Here is their newest music video for your viewing pleasure. It's not one of my favorite songs but at the same time it's charming and wonderful just like The Avett Brothers. Check them out sometime.

What's playing on your iPod?

I will never pretend to be some huge music maniac. I like what I like and I don't really care if it's considered "good" or "bad" music. I figured that every now and again I would share what I am listening to since it's such a huge part of who I am. Like most people I know I love music and even though I myself couldn't sing to save my life!, there is definitely a soundtrack to my life. I figured today is the perfect day to start this little feature off so without further ado; here is what I am listening to on my iPod.

Today I've got M. Ward blasting from my iPhone while I crochet some sweet little nautical baby leggings! I don't know which I'm more excited about; Ward or the leggings!

I first heard about Ward when I fell in love with the Monsters of Folk album. I had no idea who Ward was and I couldn't pick his voice from Conner Oberst, Jim James or Mike Mogis on the Monsters of Folk album. (I don't even think Mike Mogis sings but hey, I'm not sure of that either!)

When Ward's album popped up in the Amazon $5 MP3 downloads for July I got very excited! I previewed all the samples and I fell in love. Deeply in LOVE. I definitely know which songs are his on the Monsters album now...he's got this eerie haunting voice that is so beautiful at the same time. I really am loving this album, it's growing on me more and more with each passing minute. Oh, and the track with Lucinda Williams. GASP! I am loving her voice. She's got this Janis Joplin gravely thing going on and now I must check her out as well. I would highly recommend you head on over to Amazon and check him out.
